Kebebasan merupakan hal yang paradoksal bagi manusia. Secara alamiah manusia terlahir dengan membawa kehendak bebasnya yang terbatasi oleh berbagai macam hal di luar dirinya. Penelitian kualitatif ini bertujuan menginterpretasikan secara kritis proses pengalaman pembebasan diri tokoh Khady Demba dalam novel Trois Femmes Puissantes (2009) karya Marie NDiaye. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa identitas kedirian Khady Demba tidak terlepas dan sekaligus legitimasinya sebagai perempuan Afrika yang terusir namun sekaligus menanggung beban harapan untuk memperbaiki kondisi ekonomi keluarga, masyarakat, dan negaranya. Sosok individu yang sederhana, Khady Demba menjalani kebebasannya dengan mengikatkan diri pada hal-hal lain yang sering kali tidak manusiawi, dalam pencariannya akan ‘rumah’ yang secara tragis mengantarkannya pada kematian. Keterbatasan pengetahuan karena proses individuasinya tidak berjalan dengan baik, Khady Demba merepresentasikan kegelisahan penulis terhadap permasalahan sosial musafir tangguh sekaligus naif dan tragis Afrika menuju tanah impian bernama Eropa / Prancis. Namun, melalui tokoh ini, pembaca dapat becermin bahwa hidup terlalu berharga untuk disia-siakan, makna diri harus disusun sendiri sebelum ajal menjemput.
