Improving Science Teacher Competence through a Workshop on the Implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Differentiated STEM Learning

Abstract

This community service program aimed to improve science teachers' competencies in implementing differentiated STEM-based learning supported by artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The target participants were science teachers from Labschool network schools under the Foundation of Universitas Negeri Jakarta (YP-UNJ) and members of the Physics Subject Teacher Working Group (MGMP) in DKI Jakarta. The main problems identified were limited understanding of differentiated instruction, insufficient technical skills in AI utilization, and a lack of instructional resources integrating AI and STEM approaches. The implementation was carried out in three stages: socialization of differentiated learning and AI concepts, theoretical and practical training on AI-supported STEM instruction, and intensive mentoring for teachers in designing and applying AI-based differentiated learning. The results showed significant improvements in both conceptual understanding and technical competencies among participating teachers. Most participants successfully developed AI-assisted lesson plans, designed adaptive assessments, and contextualized STEM-based instruction. Furthermore, an online learning community was established to facilitate continued collaboration and knowledge sharing. This program has made a meaningful contribution to improving science education quality and supporting the achievement of SDG Goal 4: Quality Education.
