This research aims to describe the independence of participants in culinary skills training that developed after attending the training, based on self-assessment conducted by each individual. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and observations. Data analysis was carried out qualitatively using descriptive methods, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that culinary skills training participants exhibit independence across five dimensions: self-confidence, discipline, responsibility, initiative-driven behavior, and self-control. Based on self-assessment data from the participants, the training enabled them to cook a variety of foods, including snacks, cakes, and main courses. They assessed themselves as confident in starting their own businesses upon release, leveraging the experience and skills gained during the training, thereby reducing the likelihood of recidivism. Consequently, prison authorities can develop strategies to attract more inmates to join the culinary skills training, as the current training only involved five participants. One potential strategy is to inform inmates of the benefits of participating in the training, such as the possibility of receiving sentence remissions.
