Flute Ensemble Training in Junior High School: Fostering Musical and Collaborative Competencies

Abstract

Orchestra extracurricular activities are one of the ways to develop students' musical skills in schools. In these activities, flute ensemble training not only focuses on mastering instrument-playing techniques but also plays a role in building students' collaborative skills, discipline, and musical sensitivity. However, the success of flute ensemble training is influenced by practice planning, learning methods, interactions among participants, and the coach's strategies in handling differences in students' abilities. This research is important because studies on flute ensemble training in the context of orchestra extracurricular activities at the junior high school level are still limited, especially those that examine the integration of musical and collaborative skill development simultaneously. This study aims to describe the process of flute ensemble training and analyze the development of students' musical and collaborative skills in extracurricular activities at Santa Ursula Jakarta Junior High School. The research used a qualitative case study method with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation. The research subjects included the orchestra coordinator, flute ensemble coach, conductor, and students. The results showed that the training was carried out in a systematic sequence of opening, core, and closing stages using demonstration, lecture, drill, and peer tutoring methods. Grouping based on skill level helped make the learning process more effective. Besides improving skills in reading notation, tempo, rhythm, embouchure, and sound quality, the training also developed discipline, responsibility, and the ability to work together among students. The study concluded that flute ensemble training contributes to the development of students’ musical and collaborative competencies and supports the continuity of orchestra-based music learning in schools.
