Abstract

This study aims to analyze the potential of Kerinci’s local history as a learning resource for multicultural education. Research lies in the fact that history teaching in schools still tends to focus on national narratives while neglecting the richness of local history, which is filled with values of tolerance, solidarity, and humanity. This study employs a qualitative approach through library research, using data collected from books, academic journals, and relevant scholarly articles. Data were analyzed using content analysis based on James A. Banks’s theory of multicultural education. The findings reveal that Kerinci’s local history embodies strong multicultural values reflected in various aspects: the people’s struggle against colonialism represents unity and social justice; the traditional Mendapo governance system highlights local democracy and consensus; the Kenduri Sko ceremony symbolizes togetherness and mutual cooperation; Kerinci’s oral literature conveys empathy and humanitarian values; and the philosophy “adat bersendi syarak, syarak bersendi Kitabullah” illustrates harmony between custom and religion. Altogether, these elements demonstrate that Kerinci’s local history holds significant potential as a contextual and relevant learning resource for fostering students’ multicultural awareness. Therefore, integrating these local values into history learning can strengthen students’ national character that is tolerant, inclusive, and civilized.
