Abstract

Communicative violence against adolescents often occurs in Indonesian households, where older family members verballyabuse and intimidate younger family members. These family members are unaware that communication violence is occurring due to the influence of patriarchal culture, where family members consider it normal because of the demand to respect all actions and words of older family members. However, with the advent of social media, these adolescent family members have realized that the communication that occurs in their families is a form of violence. This study aims to understand how adolescents interpret communication violence in the household and the influence of social media on their understanding ofthis phenomenon. The research problem focuses on how adolescents interpret their communication violence. A phenomenological approach was used, involving four adolescents aged 17-25 years as informants. The findings show thatadolescents interpret verbal abuse as verbal acts that are demeaning, controlling, and cause emotional damage. In addition, social media is considered a channel that can intensify or reduce the impact of verbal abuse in the household. This study concludes with the need for education and empowerment of adolescents to recognize and resist verbal abuse in both real-world and digital contexts.
