Abstract

This study aims to describe the suitability of the YouTube channel Learn Japanese with Tanaka san for Japanese language learning among eleventh-grade students at SMAN 62 Jakarta, and to identify the channel's strengths and weaknesses based on student responses. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with purposive sampling, analyzing content suitability through a comparison matrix based on Arsyad's (2006) media criteria, and further examined using Krashen's (1982) Input Hypothesis and Long's (1996) Interaction Hypothesis. Response data were collected through a questionnaire completed by 60 eleventh-grade students and corroborated by a teacher interview for source triangulation. The findings show that the channel supports the achievement of learning objectives for the hajimemashite and watashi no yume themes, but insufficiently supports the arigatou theme, as its content remains focused on providing comprehensible input without facilitating students' independent oral production. Based on student responses, the channel was rated favorably across all measured aspects, including accessibility, usefulness, time efficiency, practicality, message clarity, and attractiveness, though it was consistently positioned as a supplementary medium rather than a substitute for teacher instruction.
