Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of father involvement on the formation of masculinity concepts among adolescent boys in the Greater Jakarta area. The study is grounded in the increasing phenomenon of father absence and low levels of paternal involvement within urban families in Indonesia. A quantitative, non-experimental cross-sectional design was employed, involving 475 male adolescents aged 15–20 years. Father involvement was measured using the Father Involvement Scale, while masculinity was assessed using the Male Role Norms Scale. The results of the Spearman’s rho analysis indicate that higher levels of father involvement are associated with a stronger tendency for adolescents to develop masculinity concepts aligned with socially prescribed male gender roles, although the magnitude of this influence was relatively weak. All three dimensions of father involvement—engagement, accessibility, and responsibility—demonstrated consistent contributions to the formation of masculinity concepts. In addition, the Kruskal–Wallis test revealed differences in father involvement based on age and place of residence, with younger adolescents and those living in suburban areas reporting higher levels of father involvement. Overall, the findings underscore the importance of father involvement in shaping masculinity concepts among adolescent boys, particularly within urban family contexts characterized by complex social dynamics and developmental demands. The findings also carry educational implications, especially in helping adolescents understand how the development of unhealthy or toxic forms of masculinity may affect their behavior, social relationships, and emotional regulation during this developmental period.
