Abstract

Social media has become an integral part of daily life, particularly among individuals in the emerging adulthood stage (18–24 years old), who represent the dominant users of Instagram. Although it is often associated with negative psychological impacts such as loneliness and anxiety, social media can also facilitate the development of social capital, both online and offline. Social capital provides valuable resources such as emotional support, information, and a sense of connectedness, all of which can contribute to subjective well-being. However, research specifically examining the relationship between online and offline social capital and subjective well-being among Instagram users in Indonesia remains limited. This study aims to examine the relationship between social capital (online and offline) and subjective well-being among Instagram users in the emerging adulthood age group. The study employed a quantitative correlational design involving 145 participants aged 18–24 years who are active Instagram users and fluent in Indonesian. Data were collected using a non-probability convenience sampling technique through an online questionnaire distributed via Google Forms and analyzed using Pearson Product Moment correlation tests. The results revealed that offline social capital had a significant positive relationship with most aspects of subjective well-being, except for negative affect. In contrast, online social capital showed a significant positive relationship only with positive affect and flourishing, but not with life satisfaction, negative affect, or affect balance. These findings highlight that offline interactions play a stronger role in supporting individuals’ subjective well-being compared to online interactions.
