About the Journal

Jurnal Studi Al-Qur’an (JSQ) is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to advancing scholarly inquiry into the Qur’an, particularly its relationship with education, interpretation, knowledge transmission, and educational transformation. The journal examines how the Qur’an is taught, interpreted, transmitted, and applied across diverse educational contexts, from classical learning traditions and Islamic educational institutions to contemporary schools, universities, pesantren, and digital environments. This orientation reflects the understanding of the Qur’an as a living source of knowledge, ethical reasoning, human formation, and educational imagination. JSQ welcomes interdisciplinary and contextual studies that explore how Qur’anic knowledge is interpreted, recontextualized, mediated, and negotiated across different historical, cultural, institutional, and technological settings. The journal encourages research on Qur’anic interpretation and pedagogy, curriculum and instructional design, educational technology, digital Qur’anic learning, teacher and learner experiences, and the relationship between Qur’anic knowledge and contemporary educational challenges. Comparative and cross-cultural studies are particularly welcomed as ways of understanding the diverse traditions through which Qur’anic knowledge is learned and transmitted. Building upon this orientation, JSQ explores six thematic areas: (1) Qur’anic interpretation, hermeneutics, and educational meaning; (2) Qur’anic pedagogy, curriculum, teaching, learning, and assessment; (3) Qur’anic ethics, spirituality, character formation, citizenship, and human development; (4) Qur’anic education, society, culture, diversity, and identity; (5) Qur’anic knowledge in dialogue with science, technology, sustainability, and contemporary challenges; and (6) Qur’anic education, institutions, policy, governance, and educational transformation. Through these areas, the journal connects Qur’anic studies with education, humanities, social sciences, and emerging fields of knowledge. JSQ welcomes contributions from any national, regional, or intellectual context, whether or not they are explicitly framed as Qur’anic education, provided they demonstrate clear relevance to the ways Qur’anic knowledge is interpreted, transmitted, learned, and transformed. By connecting classical traditions with contemporary educational developments and locally grounded scholarship with global academic debates, JSQ seeks to advance Qur’anic education as a dynamic field of international scholarship.

Focus

Jurnal Studi Al-Qur'an (JSQ) explores how the Qur'an contributes to the transformation of individuals, educational institutions, communities, and societies, in pursuit of human flourishing, justice, and sustainable futures. The journal engages the Qur'an across four dimensions of epistemic, ethical, professional, and societal transformations, treating it not merely as a text to be interpreted, but as a living force shaping thought, character, practice, and society.

Scope

1. Qur'an as Source of Knowledge This pillar is dedicated to exploring how the Qur'an shapes understanding, learning, and the formation of knowledge. It highlights Qur'anic educational philosophy and theory, as well as innovation in pedagogy and curriculum design. The journal welcomes work that examines how epistemic assumptions rooted in the Qur'an inform contemporary educational thought and practice.
2. Qur'an as Moral Community One of the distinctive focuses of this journal is the Qur'an's role in forming virtue, character, and ethical responsibility. As educational institutions increasingly grapple with questions of citizenship, justice, and compassion, there is a growing need for scholarly work that addresses moral and communal formation from a Qur'anic perspective. This focus examines how ethical transformation is cultivated through Qur'anic teaching and learning.
3. Qur'an as Catalyst of Agency This area focuses on how educators and institutional leaders enact meaningful change, informed by Qur'anic teaching. It explores teacher agency and educational leadership, alongside the integration of science, technology, and knowledge, including emerging questions of artificial intelligence in education. Articles are encouraged to explore how professional actors translate Qur'anic understanding into practice, particularly amid technological and institutional change.
4. Qur'an as Vision of Flourishing Futures The journal welcomes innovative approaches to the study of Qur'anic education in relation to sustainability, human development, and social transformation. Contributions should offer new perspectives, evidence, or methodologies addressing how Qur'anic education contributes to flourishing individuals, resilient institutions, and just, sustainable societies, including comparative and global perspectives.
