Abstract

The cultural elements in illustration are not a new phenomenon in the art world; symbolism and cultural values have long been integral to fine arts, culture, and visual arts. Even renowned animation studios like Disney Pixar consistently adopt this approach by incorporating cultural diversity from various countries into their animated works. For instance, in their latest animation, "Turning Red," they draw inspiration from Chinese culture as a primary element in its narrative and visualization. In this context, Immanuel Elizabeth, a student from Bandung Institute of Technology, has successfully crafted an illustrative work in the form of an official poster for the film. This research aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of the symbolic cultural elements in Immanuel Elizabeth's illustrative work, considering its relevance to the film's context and poster design. How do the Chinese cultural elements present in the poster interact with the story or message intended by the film "Turning Red"? Additionally, the research investigates public responses to the artwork. The results of this study are expected to provide a deeper understanding of the cultural relevance in visual arts and how art can serve as a means to convey cultural messages and strengthen cultural understanding among the public. These findings can serve as a reference for researchers and academics interested in the relationship between art and culture.
