During the Indonesian revolution, newspapers have an important role because newspapers were able to express their views, attitudes, and positions in a firm and frontal manner. At this time, the Indonesian national press could be categorized into two groups, namely the revolutionary national press and the contra-revolutionary national press. The purpose of this research is to examine the pro and contra of the national press in maintaining independence during the Indonesian revolution. The research used historical method, data collection techniques using documentation techniques and literature techniques. The results showed that the revolutionary national press wanted to defend Indonesia's independence was carried out by means of fighting and the contra revolutionary national press wanted to defend Indonesia's independence was carried out by means of negotiations. The two presses competed with each other to gather public opinion in making decisions to defend Indonesia's independence. In the end, efforts to defend Indonesia's independence were carried out by negotiating/diplomacy.
