Abstract

Drought is a phenomenon that occurs almost every year in various countries, including Indonesia, as a result of the transition from the rainy season to the dry season. Drought can be categorized into natural drought and human-induced drought, each with different impacts and requiring distinct mitigation strategies. West Sumbawa Regency (KSB), West Nusa Tenggara, is one of the regions in Indonesia experiencing an increase in drought intensity, significantly affecting water supply, public health, and community well-being, as well as threatening agricultural production and environmental quality. This study analyzes changes in the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and drought levels using the Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) method in West Sumbawa Regency from 2014 to 2024. The results show an increase in dense vegetation from 70,375.13 hectares (40%) in 2014 to 77,903.25 hectares (45%) in 2024, while moderately dense vegetation has decreased significantly. Sparse vegetation has increased, while non-vegetated areas have remained stable. VCI analysis indicates that 54,228 hectares experience drought, including 47,863.44 hectares in the extreme category.
