Abstract

Literary works contain various symbol to construct meaning and enrich their narratives, including the sun. Across literary texts, the sun has been represented throuh diverse meanings, from a symbol of life to one of supreme power. As a multimodal novel that integrates verbal texts and visual texts (illustrations), Pangeran Cilik also presents the sun as symbolic element in its meaning-making process. However, studies examining the representation of the sun in this novel is limited. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the representation of the sun in the Pangeran Cilik through relationship between verbal texts and visual texts. This qualitative study adopts Kress and van Leeuwen’s multimodal approach to analyze six illustrations and their narratives featuring the sun. The Findings show that the sun is predominantly represents as a temporal marker, with verbal and visual elements working together to construct temporal and narrative meaning throughout the novel. It suggests that time functions as a meaningful narrative resource rather than merely indicating the sequence of events.
