Abstract

Arabic language proficiency plays an important role in hadith learning, as hadiths were originally written and transmitted in Arabic. However, studies that specifically examine the significance of Arabic language proficiency in relation to the memorization of the Forty Nawawi Hadiths (Arba'in Nawawiyyah) in Islamic boarding schools remain relatively limited. This study aims to analyze the importance of Arabic language proficiency for the memorization of the Forty Nawawi Hadiths among students at Integritas Qurani 368 Islamic Boarding School. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with three senior students who had completed the memorization of the Forty Nawawi Hadiths and were selected using purposive sampling. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings indicate that Arabic language proficiency helps students understand vocabulary, sentence structures, and the meanings of hadiths, thereby facilitating the memorization process and reducing errors in recalling hadith texts. Furthermore, Arabic language proficiency supports a deeper understanding of the memorized material, making memorization more meaningful. This study concludes that Arabic language proficiency is an important factor in supporting the effectiveness of memorizing the Forty Nawawi Hadiths. Therefore, Arabic language instruction and hadith memorization programs should be developed in an integrated manner to enhance the quality of hadith learning in Islamic boarding schools.
