Abstract

Muhammadiyah Tarjih fatwas are argumentative texts that connect Qur’anic verses, hadith, scholarly opinions, and previous institutional decisions. This study examines citation forms, the positioning and sequencing of religious evidence, intertextual relationships, and their roles in constructing argumentation and legal legitimacy. It employs qualitative document analysis using Ruth Wodak’s Discourse-Historical Approach. Documents were purposively selected from Himpunan Putusan Tarjih, Tanya Jawab Agama, official Tarjih and Tajdid Council publications, and Muhammadiyah’s website. Analysis involved identifying intertextual sources, coding citation forms, mapping evidence sequences, and interpreting recontextualization. Findings indicate that the Qur’an provides principles, value orientations, and normative foundations, while hadith explains, elaborates, reinforces, limits, or operationalizes these foundations. Evidence sequences follow hierarchical, accumulative-preventive, dialogical-tarjih, and institutional-reformative patterns. Intertextual relationships encompass explanation, elaboration, reinforcement, limitation, harmonization, analogy, and expanded application. Legal meaning thus emerges through interconnected evidence rather than isolated citations. These relationships establish coherence, authority, and relevance, positioning Tarjih fatwas as institutional texts that integrate scriptural authority, scholarly interpretation, institutional continuity, and contemporary social needs.
