This study aims to understand the existing issues related to national borders and to identify potential solutions for addressing these challenges based on the literature. It analyzes the development and research trends on border management in scientific publications from 2016 to 2024, with a particular focus on Indonesia’s border area management. The theoretical framework incorporates concepts of national security, international cooperation, public policy, risk management, and the application of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence in border governance. Using a bibliometric approach with VOSviewer software, this study visualizes keyword networks and research trend overlays that illustrate the dynamics of border management. The results indicate that border management is a central topic closely associated with issues of sovereignty, fundamental rights, cross-border cooperation, and technology-based management systems. The research trend also shows a shift from traditional security perspectives toward the integration of digital technologies, sustainability aspects such as food and environmental security, and enhanced risk management efficiency in border areas. Furthermore, the study identifies five major clusters encompassing security, public policy, fundamental rights, management technology, and border theory. These findings provide comprehensive insights into the challenges and opportunities of Indonesia’s border area management, particularly in the context of technology-driven policies and efforts to strengthen national resilience and sovereignty.
