Abstract

Cooperation (gotong royong) is a fundamental value in Indonesian social life, representing the spirit of collectivism, togetherness, and caring among citizens. This value has long been a hallmark of Indonesian culture and serves as a social glue amidst diversity. However, in the context of modern society that continues to change due to globalization and digitalization, the meaning and practice of gotong royong have undergone significant transformation. This study aims to understand how the values of gotong royong adapt and change in the modern era. The main issues raised are the shifting form and meaning of gotong royong and the continuity of its essence in contemporary social structures. This study uses a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with informants from various social backgrounds based on the theoretical framework of Jean-Francois Lyotard's postmodernism. This study examines the fragmentation of the grand narrative of gotong royong and the emergence of new forms of social solidarity. The results show that gotong royong is not easy but rather transforms from a physical practice in real space to a form of digital solidarity that maintains the spirit of togetherness, albeit in a more flexible and contextual form.
