Abstract

This study aims to analyze land use changes in Medan City from 2014 to 2024 using Landsat 8 satellite imagery and a Geographic Information System (GIS) approach. The analysis was carried out through image interpretation and area calculation of each land use class. The results show an increase in residential areas by +40.56 hectares, reflecting the growth of housing areas due to population increase and urban infrastructure needs. In contrast, there was a decrease in industrial (–11.97 ha), plantation (–62.25 ha), water body (–63.37 ha), and agricultural (–15.30 ha) areas. These decreases indicate significant land conversion from primary to secondary and tertiary sectors. This phenomenon also reflects rapid urbanization, where productive lands are reduced due to settlement and infrastructure development. Therefore, the findings emphasize the importance of sustainable urban spatial planning to prevent adverse impacts on ecological balance and the urban environment.
