Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the level of accessibility to primary and secondary education facilities in Bontang Barat District, East Kalimantan. A quantitative descriptive approach was used, supported by a Geographic Information System. The data collected included school locations, road networks, and demographic information, which were then analyzed using the shortest path modeling method and service zone analysis. The mapping results show that elementary schools have relatively even service coverage and are able to cover most residential areas within a radius of 800 meters. In contrast, access to junior high schools and senior high schools is still limited, especially in coastal and peripheral areas. Spatial distribution analysis using the nearest neighbor approach indicates that the distribution of schools is random without any significant clustering patterns. These findings show that equitable access to education, particularly at the secondary level, has not yet been fully achieved. This study concludes that in addition to increasing the number of schools, spatial planning of facilities is needed to ensure more equitable access to education across the region. The results of this study are expected to serve as a basis for the formulation of policies on educational facility development and the strengthening of supporting transportation infrastructure.
