Abstract

This article examines the dynamics of cultural transformation among the Outer Baduy community through the lens of cultural geography, focusing on changes in spatial adaptation, mobility patterns, and social practices shaped by interactions with the outside world. Although several studies have explored Baduy culture, most have concentrated on anthropological and structural dimensions, leaving a research gap in understanding spatially based cultural transformations—particularly within the Outer Baduy community through a systematic approach. This study aims to identify patterns of cultural change among the Outer Baduy, map the driving factors behind these transformations, and assess their implications for spatial practices, cultural identity, and the community’s relationship with its environment. The research employs a structured literature review (systematic literature review) covering academic publications from the past two decades. Data sources were obtained from internationally indexed (Scopus) scientific databases, and the analysis was carried out using thematic coding techniques to identify spatial patterns, forms of socio-economic interaction, and shifts in cultural values. The findings indicate that cultural transformation in the Outer Baduy is driven by three main factors: (1) intensified economic interactions and the commercialization of cultural products, (2) changes in mobility patterns and regional accessibility, and (3) selective accommodation of modernity. The results also reveal shifts in settlement spatial orientation, changes in household economic activities, and continuous negotiation of cultural identity while maintaining core customary principles. In conclusion, the dynamics of cultural transformation in the Outer Baduy reflect complex spatial and social adaptation processes, in which modernity is accepted selectively yet regulated through community norms. This study contributes to strengthening the cultural geography perspective in understanding transformations within Indigenous communities in Indonesia.
