Abstract

This study aims to describe forms of religious tolerance between Istiqlal Mosque and the Jakarta Cathedral as two places of worship located in close physical proximity and shaped by a long history of social interaction. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through observation, interviews, photographic documentation, and written documentation, and analyzed using Spradley’s model. The findings reveal that tolerance is manifested through functional cooperation, such as shared use of parking areas during major religious celebrations, symbolic support through the exchange of sacrificial animals and holiday hampers, as well as routine coordination involving security and event management. The presence of the Terowongan Silaturahim (Harmony Tunnel) further enhances access and interaction between the two communities. Additionally, the perceptions of congregants and administrators reflect mutual respect and pride in the harmonious relationship between the two worship sites. This study concludes that tolerance between Istiqlal Mosque and the Jakarta Cathedral is not merely symbolic but is demonstrated through consistent and sustainable collaborative practices.
