Abstract

Marine environmental pollution stemming from ship operations—specifically within the engine room—remains a critical ecological threat to global marine biodiversity. Incidents involving oil spills and illegal waste discharge are frequently triggered by technical system failures, compounded by crew anxiety during emergencies. Marine engineering cadets, as future engine room operators, are required to master not only mechanical aspects (hard skills) but also adaptive problem-solving capabilities under extreme psychological pressure. This study aims to analyze the urgency, efficacy, and dynamics of problem-solving skills among marine engineering cadets at the Marine Polytechnic as a means of mitigating marine pollution risks during engine room crises. A descriptive qualitative method employing a purposive case study approach was utilized. The research focused on observing final-year marine engineering cadets during training sessions in the Engine Room Simulator (ERS) laboratory. Data collection relied on triangulation, incorporating structured participatory observation based on Engine-room Resource Management (ERM) competency rubrics, in-depth interviews, and an analysis of simulator data logs. The findings reveal significant cognitive limitations within the cadets' problem-solving cycle. While the cadets demonstrated excellent performance in the problem identification stage (85%), their capacity declined sharply during the solution execution phase (40%) and the environmental impact evaluation stage (30%).
