Abstract

This study is driven by the growing misuse of digital spaces, which has weakened the quality of public discourse among university students. This condition highlights the need for an educational approach capable of strengthening democratic understanding and political tolerance. The purpose of this research is to develop a digital-based democracy education model that aligns with student learning needs. The study employs a Research and Development (R&D) method through stages of needs analysis, model design, expert validation, limited trials, and large-scale implementation. The respondents consisted of 23 undergraduate students at Universitas Baturaja enrolled in the Civic Education course. The findings indicate that students’ multicultural competence remains at a moderate level, particularly in openness to cross-cultural dialogue and participation in digital discussions. These results informed the development of an interactive and reflective learning model. Expert validation produced an average score of 4.45, indicating high validity. Implementation results show an increase in multicultural competence from 3.08 to 4.25. Overall, the digital-based democracy education model proves effective in enhancing students’ multicultural competence in higher education.

 

Abstrak

Urgensi penelitian didasarkan pada maraknya penyalahgunaan media digital sebagai ruang diskusi publik, sehingga diperlukan pendekatan yang lebih efektif dalam membangun pemahaman demokratis dan multikultural di kalangan mahasiswa. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengembangkan model pendidikan demokrasi berbasis digital guna memperkuat kompetensi multikultural mahasiswa. Metode yang digunakan adalah penelitian dan pengembangan (R&D) dengan pendekatan kuantitatif dan kualitatif, meliputi analisis kebutuhan, pengembangan model, validasi ahli, uji coba terbatas, dan implementasi secara luas. Adapun responden dari penelitian ini 23 Mahasiswa program Sarjana Universitas Baturaja yang sedang atau akan mengambil mata kuliah Pendidikan Kewarganegaraan. Hasil Penelitian Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kompetensi multikultural mahasiswa di era digital masih berada pada kategori sedang, dengan kecenderungan rendah dalam keterbukaan berdiskusi lintas budaya dan partisipasi aktif dalam dialog multikultural. Kondisi ini menjadi dasar dikembangkannya model pendidikan demokrasi berbasis digital yang dirancang interaktif, reflektif, dan kontekstual untuk meningkatkan pemahaman, sikap, serta keterampilan mahasiswa dalam menyikapi keberagaman. Model yang dikembangkan telah divalidasi oleh para ahli dengan skor rata-rata 4,45 dan dinyatakan sangat valid dari aspek isi, media, maupun pendekatan pembelajaran. Implementasi model pada uji coba terbatas hingga skala luas membuktikan adanya peningkatan signifikan, di mana rata-rata skor kompetensi multikultural mahasiswa naik dari 3,08 menjadi 4,25. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa pendidikan demokrasi berbasis digital efektif sebagai strategi untuk memperkuat kompetensi multikultural mahasiswa di perguruan tinggi.
