Communication in community-based cultural work settings remains insufficiently understood, particularly in explaining how long-term interaction develops into relational closeness while formal work roles remain intact. This study examines the communicative processes underlying relational closeness among local actors involved in Batik Lasem cultural practices. Using a qualitative interpretive approach, data were collected through a focus group discussion with eight batik workers and in-depth interviews with two Batik Lasem business owners. The data were analyzed inductively through thematic analysis and interpreted using Relational Dialectics Theory. The findings show that relational closeness develops through sustained interaction, shared experiences, flexible work practices, and everyday communication that gradually cultivate familiarity, trust, mutual belonging, and family-like relationships. However, relational closeness does not eliminate organizational boundaries, as owners and workers continue to recognize their respective roles and responsibilities. Instead, connectedness and autonomy coexist through culturally embedded communication practices emphasizing harmony, respect, and relational continuity. This study contributes to interpersonal communication scholarship by conceptualizing relational closeness as a dynamic communicative accomplishment rather than an automatic outcome of prolonged interaction. It also extends the application of Relational Dialectics Theory to community-based cultural work settings where interpersonal closeness and structured work relationships are continuously negotiated.
