Post Publication Policy
Effective date: 16 October 2026. This policy applies to all articles published in Hayula.
Hayula: Indonesian Journal of Multidisciplinary Islamic Studies regards publication as part of an ongoing scholarly conversation. This policy explains how the journal handles discussion of published articles, concerns about research integrity, and corrections to the published record. It follows the guidance of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Guiding Principles
- Openness: published work may be discussed, questioned, and improved.
- Accuracy: the published record must be correct and reliable.
- Transparency: published articles are never altered silently; every change is made through a public notice.
- Fairness: authors are given the opportunity to respond, and corrections serve the literature, not the punishment of authors.
Part 1. Post-Publication Discussion
1.1 Forms of discussion
- Comment (letter to the editor): a short scholarly response to a published article.
- Authors’ reply: the response of the original authors to a published comment.
- Integrity concern: a confidential report of possible misconduct or serious error. It is handled under Part 2, not as a public comment.
1.2 Requirements for comments
A comment must:
- be no longer than 1,000 words, with no more than 10 references;
- be submitted within 12 months of the article’s publication, or within 12 months of the effective date of this policy for articles published earlier;
- address the scholarly content of the article, not the authors personally;
- be written in English and follow the journal’s reference style (APA 7th Edition); comments are exempt from the length, abstract, and reference requirements that apply to articles in the Author Guidelines;
- include a declaration of any conflict of interest.
1.3 Procedure for comments
- Send the comment to journalhayula@unj.ac.id with the subject “Comment – [article DOI]”.
- The editorial office acknowledges receipt within 7 working days.
- The editors assess whether the comment meets the requirements in 1.2.
- Comments that meet the requirements may be sent for peer review.
- If the comment is accepted, the original authors are invited to submit a reply within 30 days.
- The editors review the authors’ reply.
- The comment and reply are published together in the same issue.
- Both are linked to the original article.
- If the discussion reveals an error, the editors consider a correction under Part 3.
Part 2. Concerns about Research Integrity
2.1 What can be reported
Readers, reviewers, editors, or institutions may report concerns such as:
- plagiarism or self-plagiarism;
- data fabrication, falsification, or image manipulation;
- duplicate or redundant publication;
- authorship disputes or undisclosed conflicts of interest;
- unethical research, including the lack of informed consent or ethical approval;
- manipulated peer review or citation manipulation;
- serious errors that may invalidate the findings.
2.2 Procedure
- Send the concern confidentially to the Editor-in-Chief at journalhayula@unj.ac.id, with the subject “Confidential – Integrity Concern – [article DOI]”.
- Include the article title, DOI, a description of the concern, and supporting evidence. Anonymous reports are considered if they are supported by concrete evidence.
- The editorial office acknowledges receipt within 7 working days.
- The editors conduct a preliminary assessment within 14 days.
- If the concern is credible, the authors are asked to respond within 30 days.
- The editors evaluate the response, consulting experts where necessary.
- Unresolved cases are referred to the authors’ institution. The journal does not conduct misconduct investigations itself.
- The editors decide on the outcome: no action, correction, expression of concern, or retraction.
- The person who reported the concern is informed of the outcome, while confidentiality is maintained.
Part 3. Corrections and Changes to Published Articles
Detailed rules are set out in the journal’s Correction & Retraction Policy. In summary:
3.1 Erratum
An erratum corrects a significant error introduced by the journal during copyediting, typesetting, or publication.
3.2 Corrigendum
A corrigendum corrects a significant error made by the authors that does not affect the main findings or conclusions. Minor errors such as spelling, punctuation, or formatting are normally not corrected.
3.3 Changes to authorship
After publication, authors may not be added, removed, or reordered without the written agreement of all authors, including any author being removed, and an explanation of the change. Approved changes are published as a corrigendum. Disputes are referred to the authors’ institutions in line with COPE guidance. Name changes (e.g., for personal or legal reasons) may be made on request without a public notice.
3.4 Expression of concern
An expression of concern is issued when serious doubts exist about an article but the evidence is inconclusive or an investigation is ongoing. It is followed by a correction, a retraction, or a statement that the concern has been resolved.
3.5 Retraction
An article is retracted when its findings are unreliable because of major error or misconduct. A retraction may be requested by the authors or initiated by the Editor-in-Chief. The retracted article remains online with a “RETRACTED” watermark and a link to the retraction notice.
3.6 Removal
The full text is removed only in exceptional cases involving legal infringement, defamation, or serious safety risks. The title, authors, DOI, and an explanatory notice remain online.
3.7 Procedure for corrections
- Send a request to journalhayula@unj.ac.id with the subject “Correction request – [article DOI]”.
- Include the exact location of the error, the incorrect text, the proposed correction, and a brief explanation.
- Author requests require the written agreement of all co-authors.
- The editorial office acknowledges receipt within 7 working days.
- The editors decide whether an erratum, a corrigendum, or no correction is required.
- The authors approve the wording of the notice, normally within 14 days.
- The notice is published with its own DOI, normally within 60 days of the decision.
- The notice and the original article are linked to each other, and the notice is listed in the next issue.
3.8 Model wording for notices
