Abstract

Water sustainability in Sleman involves not only resource management but also the cultural and religious meanings attached to rainwater. This study analyzes how Kenduri Banyu Udan within the Banyu Bening Community constructs and negotiates the sacred and ecological meanings of rainwater. The study employs a descriptive qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with six purposively selected informants, non-participant observation, and documentation. As data collection did not coincide with the ritual, the structure and symbolism of Kenduri Banyu Udan were examined through interviews, photographs, community archives, and related documentation. The findings indicate that rainwater is constructed as a divine provision associated with gratitude, amanah, khalifah, moral responsibility, and care for creation. These meanings are expressed through ritual symbols, collective activities, environmental education, and conservation practices. However, internalization varies due to skepticism regarding rainwater quality, continued dependence on groundwater, and uneven household engagement. The study demonstrates that local rituals provide a social space for legitimizing and negotiating ecological meanings without necessarily producing uniform environmental behavior.
