Pembedaan Makkiyyah dan Madaniyyah mengacu pada fase psikologis dan sosiologis yang dilalui oleh dakwah Islam.Makkiyyah-Madaniyyah merupakan ilmu yang berpretensi untuk memberikan informasi tentang konteks historis turunnya al-Qur’an. Perbedaan fase historis Makkiyyah-Madaniyyah berimplikasi pada variasi pesan, gaya bahasa, dan tehnik penjelasan. Melalui pemahaman yang mendalam tentang Makkiyah dan Madaniyah diharapkan kita mampu untuk merekontruksi konteks pewahyuan sehingga selanjutnya kita mampu mencari benang merah antara konteks historis masa lalu dengan konteks kekinian.
