Plagiarism Screening

JSQ: Jurnal Studi Al-Qur'an

JSQ is firmly committed to preventing plagiarism, including self-plagiarism. Authors must ensure that their work is entirely original and that the work and words of others are properly cited or quoted. Manuscripts must not have been published, in whole or in substantial part, elsewhere.

1. Forms of Plagiarism

  • Direct Plagiarism: Copying text, ideas, or data from another source without citation or quotation marks.
  • Paraphrasing Without Citation: Rewording another author's ideas or arguments without acknowledging the source.
  • Translation Plagiarism: Translating another author's work (e.g., from Arabic, Indonesian, or English) and presenting it as one's own.
  • Self-Plagiarism: Reusing substantial parts of one's own published work without citation, or submitting previously published work as new.
  • Disguised Plagiarism: Using paraphrasing or text-spinning tools, including AI, to conceal copied content.

2. Similarity Threshold

Maximum 20% similarity

The maximum accepted similarity index is 20%, excluding the bibliography. Editors read every similarity report case by case rather than relying on the percentage alone. Properly cited Qur'anic verses, hadith texts, and standard terminology are not treated as plagiarism. A low score does not rule out plagiarism, and a high score is not by itself proof of it.

3. Screening Process

  • Before Submission: Authors are encouraged to check their manuscript with a similarity-detection tool, such as Turnitin or iThenticate, available through their institution.
  • At Submission: The Editorial Team screens every manuscript during the initial evaluation, before it is sent for peer review.
  • Before Publication: The revised manuscript is screened again before it is published.

4. Handling of Plagiarism

  • Minor Issues: Limited overlap or a few missing citations within the 20% limit. The manuscript is returned to the authors for correction.
  • Plagiarism or Similarity Above 20%: The manuscript is rejected, and the authors are informed of the reason.
  • Plagiarism in a Published Article: The article is handled under the Retraction and Corrections Policies and may be retracted.

Serious or repeated cases are handled under the Research Misconduct policy.
