Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement

JSQ: Jurnal Studi Al-Qur'an

JSQ is committed to the highest standards of publication ethics. This statement sets out the responsibilities of everyone involved in the publication process: editors, reviewers, authors, and the publisher. It is based on the COPE Core Practices and the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing.

1. Duties of Editors

  • Publication Decisions: The Editor-in-Chief decides which manuscripts are published, based on their scholarly merit, originality, validity, and relevance to the journal's scope, guided by reviewer reports and the editorial board. Decisions are not influenced by payment of Article Processing Charges, fee waivers, funding sources, or advertising.
  • Fair Play: Manuscripts are evaluated for their intellectual content without regard to the authors' race, gender, religious belief or school of thought (madhhab), ethnic origin, citizenship, institutional affiliation, or political philosophy.
  • Confidentiality: Editors and editorial staff do not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.
  • Conflicts of Interest: Editors must not use unpublished material from a submitted manuscript in their own research without the author's written consent. They withdraw from handling manuscripts in which they have a conflict of interest. Manuscripts submitted by editors or board members are handled independently by another editor.
  • Handling Misconduct: Editors respond to any suspected misconduct in line with the JSQ Research Misconduct policy and COPE guidance.

2. Duties of Reviewers

  • Contribution to Editorial Decisions: Peer review assists the editor in making decisions and helps authors improve their work through constructive feedback.
  • Promptness: Reviewers who feel unqualified or cannot complete the review on time should notify the editor and withdraw from the process.
  • Confidentiality: Manuscripts are confidential documents. They must not be shared, discussed with others, or uploaded to generative AI tools without the editor's authorization.
  • Anonymity: Under JSQ's double-blind review, reviewers must not attempt to identify the authors.
  • Objectivity: Reviews are conducted objectively, with clear and supported arguments. Personal criticism of the authors is inappropriate.
  • Acknowledgement of Sources: Reviewers identify relevant work the authors have not cited, check the accuracy of Qur'anic and hadith citations where possible, and alert the editor to any substantial overlap with other publications.
  • Conflicts of Interest: Reviewers must not use privileged information for personal advantage and must decline manuscripts in which they have a competitive, collaborative, or other conflict of interest.

3. Duties of Authors

  • Reporting Standards: Authors present an accurate account of the work and an objective discussion of its significance. Qur'anic verses, tafsir, and hadith must be quoted and attributed accurately. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements are unacceptable.
  • Originality and Plagiarism: Authors submit entirely original work and properly cite or quote the work and words of others. The maximum accepted similarity is 20% (see Plagiarism Screening).
  • Multiple or Concurrent Publication: Authors must not publish essentially the same research in more than one journal or submit the same manuscript to more than one journal at the same time.
  • Authorship: Only those who meet all four authorship criteria are listed as authors. Other contributors are acknowledged (see Authorship and Contributorship). The corresponding author ensures that all co-authors have approved the final manuscript and its submission.
  • Research Ethics: Research involving human participants must meet the requirements of the Ethical Clearance policy. Every manuscript includes an Ethics Statement.
  • Conflicts of Interest and Funding: Authors disclose any financial or non-financial conflict of interest and all sources of financial support (see Conflict of Interest).
  • Use of AI: Any use of AI tools must be disclosed in line with the AI Policy. AI tools cannot be listed as authors.
  • Data Access: Authors should be prepared to provide raw data, anonymized transcripts, or research instruments if requested by the editors.
  • Fundamental Errors: Authors who discover a significant error in their published work must promptly notify the editor and cooperate to correct or retract the article.

4. Duties of the Publisher

JSQ is published by the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), Universitas Negeri Jakarta. The publisher supports the editorial independence of the journal, ensures that commercial considerations do not affect editorial decisions, and maintains open access to and long-term preservation of published content (see Archiving Policy). The publisher also works with the editors to issue corrections and retractions where needed, and cooperates with other publishers and institutions in cases of suspected misconduct.

5. Misconduct, Corrections, and Complaints

Allegations of misconduct are handled under the Research Misconduct policy. Errors and ethical breaches in published articles are addressed through the Retraction and Corrections Policies. Complaints about the editorial process or editorial decisions may be sent to the Editor-in-Chief and are handled in line with COPE guidance.
