Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

JSQ: Jurnal Studi Al-Qur’an

JSQ recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including generative AI and large language models, can support research and writing. AI cannot, however, replace human creativity, critical thinking, scholarly judgment, or accountability. This policy sets out how authors, editors, and reviewers may and may not use AI in the publication process. It follows the guidance of COPE and applies to all manuscripts submitted to JSQ.

Authors

May use AI as a support tool and must disclose it.

Editors

Limited technical use only, with confidentiality and disclosure.

Reviewers

Generative AI is not allowed in the review process.

1Use of AI by AuthorsPermitted use, prohibited use, and disclosure

Permitted

✓Improving grammar, spelling, and readability
✓Translation support, checked by the authors
✓Managing and formatting references
✓Assisting data analysis, provided the method is described and the results are verified

Prohibited

✗Generating the main content, arguments, interpretations, or conclusions
✗Interpreting Qur’anic verses, tafsir, or hadith without the authors’ own scholarly verification
✗Fabricating or manipulating data, sources, quotations, or references
✗Creating or altering images or figures, unless AI is the subject of the research and this is clearly explained

No AI authorship

AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors, because they cannot take responsibility for the work. See Authorship and Contributorship.

Verification

Authors must check all AI-assisted content for accuracy, bias, and correct citation, and remain fully responsible for the entire manuscript.

Disclosure

Any use of AI beyond basic spelling and grammar checking must be disclosed in a Declaration of AI Use placed before the References, and stated in the comments to the editor at submission.

Sample Declaration of AI Use

“During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used (name of tool and version) to (purpose, for example improve language and readability). After using this tool, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take full responsibility for the content of the publication.”

2Use of AI by EditorsConfidentiality, human decisions, and disclosure

Confidentiality

Editors must not upload submitted manuscripts, or any part of them, including abstracts, figures, and review reports, into public generative AI tools. Doing so may breach confidentiality and the authors’ rights.

Human decisions

Editorial assessment, reviewer selection, and decisions to accept, revise, or reject are made by the editors. AI must not be used to evaluate a manuscript or to make or draft an editorial decision.

Limited technical use

Editors may use secure tools approved by the journal for technical checks, such as similarity screening, reference checking, and language checks of their own correspondence.

Disclosure by editors

If an AI-assisted tool is used in handling a manuscript, the editor must record it in the editorial file and inform the authors of the tool and its purpose. Editors who use AI in writing editorials or other published content must disclose it in the same way as authors.

Suspected undisclosed AI use

Editors who suspect undisclosed or inappropriate AI use in a manuscript or review report will handle it under the Research Misconduct policy.

3Use of AI by ReviewersGenerative AI is not allowed
JSQ does not allow reviewers to use generative AI in the review process. Peer review depends on the reviewer’s own expertise, judgment, and confidentiality.
✗Do not upload a manuscript, or any part of it, into a generative AI tool.
✗Do not use generative AI to summarize, analyze, or evaluate a manuscript, or to write or draft the review report.
✓Basic spelling or grammar checkers may be used on the reviewer’s own comments only, without entering any content from the manuscript.

A review report found to have been produced with generative AI will be disregarded, and the reviewer may be removed from the reviewer database. See also the Peer Review Process.

4ViolationsHow breaches of this policy are handled

Undisclosed or prohibited use of AI is treated as a breach of publication ethics. Depending on its seriousness, the journal may:

Request a disclosure or revisionReject the manuscriptIssue a correctionRetract the article

These actions follow the Correction, Retraction, and Withdrawal Policy and the Ethics Statement.
